Dubai Unveils Plans for 260 Million Passenger Airport and Dh100 Billion Financial District
Dubai reveals ambitious projects including a new airport for 260 million passengers and a Dh100 billion financial district at leadership forum.
Dubai has announced extensive development plans aimed at enhancing travel, trade, and urban living during the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum 2026 held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
The forum gathered leaders from both government and private sectors to discuss the emirate’s future growth across aviation, transportation, finance, infrastructure, and tourism.
Expansion of Aviation and Transport Infrastructure
Khalifa Al Zaffin detailed the vision for Al Maktoum International Airport, which is being designed to accommodate up to 260 million passengers annually. He emphasized that Dubai’s goal extends beyond constructing the world’s largest airport to reimagining the passenger experience through advanced technology and streamlined processes.
Al Zaffin stated, "The best technologies are those that you do not feel," highlighting the importance of innovation in saving time and simplifying travel for passengers.
Mattar Al Tayer presented a comprehensive transport strategy covering aerial, surface, and subterranean mobility. With Dubai currently managing over 11 million journeys daily—equivalent to more than 7,000 trips per minute—the city anticipates its daytime population to double by 2040, increasing demands on its transport systems.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) aims for autonomous transport to constitute 25% of all journeys by 2030. Since 2016, air taxi trials have been underway, with the first air taxi station projected to open in 2026. Additionally, the RTA is exploring an integrated underground system designed to transport people, goods, and services.
Financial District and Infrastructure Developments
Alongside transport initiatives, Dubai is advancing plans for a Dh100 billion financial district to bolster its position as a global trade and finance hub. The forum also highlighted ongoing projects such as the Dh34 billion Metro Gold Line and the incorporation of artificial intelligence to enhance transport efficiency.
These initiatives collectively aim to support Dubai’s long-term vision of connectivity, economic growth, and improved quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
