Why prayer times differ across the Emirates

The Emirates run about two degrees of longitude from Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman to Abu Dhabi in the west, and that is enough to move the clock. The sun rises and sets on the east coast first, so Fujairah reaches Maghrib before anywhere else and Abu Dhabi reaches it last. Latitude does the rest: Ras Al Khaimah in the north sees its summer days stretch longer than Al Ain in the south.

Today the whole country is separated by 7 minutes at Maghrib: Fujairah sees sunset first and Abu Dhabi last. Fajr spans 9 minutes between the same two ends of the map.

How these timings are calculated

Every timing here uses calculation method 8, the Gulf Region standard that mosques across the United Arab Emirates follow, so these figures line up with the adhan you hear rather than with a generic worldwide table. Asr is taken at the standard Shafi'i shadow length. Mosques call the iqamah a few minutes after the adhan, so treat each time as the opening of the window rather than the moment the congregation stands.

Ramadan: iftar and suhoor

During Ramadan the Maghrib column is iftar time and Fajr marks the end of suhoor, both varying by a few minutes between emirates — worth checking your own city rather than the national headline, particularly if you are travelling between them during the month.
