UAE Residents Recommend Outdoor Activities and Safety Tips for Winter Season
As winter arrives in the UAE, residents share their favourite outdoor spots and essential safety advice for exploring nature.
With the arrival of cooler weather, the UAE presents an ideal opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore its diverse natural environments. From mountain hikes and wadis to deserts and beaches, residents are preparing to enjoy the country's scenic landscapes during the winter months.
Loui James Diwa, founder of the Lakbay Diwa Hiking Community and a UAE resident for over 12 years, emphasises the importance of safety and preparation in outdoor activities. He highlighted Ras Al Khaimah as a prime location for mountain adventures, citing its impressive scenery.
Diwa advised that hikers should check weather conditions, understand trail difficulty, and carry essential items such as proper footwear, sufficient water, energy snacks, a first-aid kit, and communication devices. He also stressed the need for group safety briefings and cautioned against risks like dehydration and flash floods in wadis.
He recommended Wadi Naqab and Wadi Shawka for their striking landscapes, while more experienced hikers might explore the Stairway to Heaven trail or Jebel Jais, which also offers adventure activities. Beginners are encouraged to start with easier trails and consider joining guided groups to ensure safety.
Hector Torio Duran, a graphic designer and outdoor enthusiast residing in the UAE for nearly 17 years, highlighted the importance of physical fitness for hiking and mountain biking. He plans to tackle the Stairway to Heaven trail and participates in mountain biking events such as the Al Salam Mountain Bike Race and the Mleiha Mountain Bike Race.
Duran also values camping as a way to disconnect from urban life and enjoys road trips to various natural destinations. He advised checking vehicle conditions before trips and informing others about travel plans. He named Wadi Naqab and Wadi Kub as peaceful spots for hiking and camping, respectively, while cautioning visitors to be mindful of wildlife like snakes.
Sanaullah Khan, a hiking community organiser with over six years in the UAE, noted that winter offers a chance to explore the country's varied natural settings, including mountain trails, hidden beaches, deserts, and coastal campsites. He also participates in desert driving during the cooler months to enjoy the dunes and sunsets.
