Dubai Police Uncover Murders Disguised as Suicides and Accidents Using Forensic Science
Dubai Police forensic experts reveal how advanced techniques exposed murders staged as suicides and accidental fires.
Dubai Police have disclosed how forensic experts played a crucial role in solving murder cases where perpetrators attempted to disguise killings as suicides or accidental incidents. Through detailed forensic engineering investigations, they were able to uncover the truth behind these staged deaths.
Lieutenant Colonel Dr Engineer Mohammad Ali Al Qasim, head of the Forensic Engineering Section at Dubai Police’s General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology, shared insights on these cases during a Dubai Police Podcast episode. He highlighted the importance of forensic engineering in examining evidence, reconstructing crime scenes, and distinguishing between accidental and intentional deaths.
Murder Disguised as Suicide
In one investigation, an individual of Asian nationality was found hanging from a shower curtain rail inside a villa. Although the scene initially suggested suicide, forensic tests revealed inconsistencies. Experts conducted weight tests on the shower rail and the belt used, discovering that the rail could only support about 90 kilograms and the belt around 70 kilograms. These results conflicted with the circumstances of the body found, leading investigators to conclude the scene had been staged to conceal a murder. This scientific evidence was pivotal in identifying and arresting the suspect.
Husband’s Murder Hidden by Vehicle Fire
Another case involved a woman and her partner attempting to cover up the murder of her husband by burning his body and vehicle near an industrial area. The suspects tried to make the incident appear as an accidental fire. Forensic examination uncovered traces of petroleum products beneath the vehicle. Laboratory analysis, including DNA and chemical testing, linked these materials to the victim’s body, proving the fire was intentionally set to destroy evidence. This investigation led to the conviction of those responsible. Dr Al Qasim noted that deliberate fires are relatively rare in the UAE compared to accidental ones and explained that fire investigations require specialized procedures depending on the type of fire.
Facial Reconstruction Identifies Murder Victim
Dubai Police also utilized advanced technology to identify a murder victim whose decomposed body was found in a desert area. Due to severe deterioration, traditional identification methods were ineffective. Using a combination of 3D scanning, genomics, DNA testing, and digital forensic techniques, experts reconstructed an approximate facial image from the skull. This reconstruction helped determine the victim’s sex, age group, and possible nationality. Sharing the image with criminal investigation departments enabled officers to identify the victim and apprehend the killer.
Role of Forensic Engineering in Investigations
The Forensic Engineering Section follows 23 approved protocols covering various areas such as buildings, transport, electrical and mechanical systems, fires, structural collapses, falls, and vehicle accidents. It collaborates closely with forensic medicine, chemistry, biology, and digital forensics to produce scientifically supported findings for judicial proceedings.
Dr Al Qasim emphasized that modern technology, including digital twin systems and 3D scanning, has greatly enhanced forensic capabilities by allowing detailed documentation and reconstruction of incidents like explosions, collisions, and falls. Additionally, forensic engineering contributes to accident prevention by identifying defects in vehicles and products. For example, technical findings related to faulty airbags prompted Dubai Police to coordinate with authorities for vehicle recalls.
He summarized the value of forensic engineering in criminal investigations by stating it connects engineering science with legal processes, transforming technical details into clear scientific evidence.
