Indian Cargo Ship Attacked Near Oman, One Crew Member Killed, 13 Rescued

An Indian cargo ship flying the national flag was attacked by an unidentified aerial object near Oman, leading to the death of one Indian crew member, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The tanker, MSV Al Jusufi, was carrying 14 Indian seafarers at the time of the incident. Omani coast guard personnel successfully rescued 13 crew members, while one sailor from Gujarat, Gandhar Nahim Ajij, died from his injuries.

Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed sorrow over the loss, stating that 13 crew members were safely evacuated and the deceased succumbed to his injuries.

Indian Government Response

The Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack in a formal statement, confirming the rescue of 13 Indian nationals and mourning the death of one. The ministry emphasized that the Indian Embassy in Oman is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities to facilitate the repatriation of both the survivors and the mortal remains of the deceased.

The statement highlighted concerns over the ongoing attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the region and urged for immediate de-escalation of tensions. It called for a diplomatic resolution to restore peace and stability, stressing the importance of uninterrupted navigation and commerce through international waterways in accordance with international law.

Context and Background

India is a major contributor of seafarers globally, with over 320,000 active Indian sailors reported in 2025. Several Indian mariners have lost their lives in recent attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran since February 28.

The Indian foreign ministry has consistently condemned such attacks on commercial vessels and has advocated for safe and unhindered passage through international waters.
