Ras Al Khaimah Begins Testing Driverless Cars in Real Urban Settings

Ras Al Khaimah has initiated trials of driverless vehicles within the Mina waterfront development to evaluate their functionality in everyday urban environments. This step aims to explore the readiness of autonomous cars for broader deployment.

The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) partnered with RAK Properties to conduct these tests as part of the newly launched Autonomous Mobility Framework and Autonomous Vehicle Sandbox initiative. The agreement was formalized in a ceremony attended by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, alongside government officials, representatives from autonomous mobility firms, and academic institutions.

Autonomous vehicles will be operated in residential and mixed-use areas within Mina to monitor their performance under typical conditions. These trials are designed to help authorities identify operational challenges and safety considerations before driverless technology is potentially introduced on a wider scale.

Safety remains a priority, with all testing adhering to approved technical standards and regulatory requirements tailored to each testing location. Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, Director General of RAKTA, emphasized the importance of real-world testing to determine the technology's practical viability and to understand its application across diverse urban contexts.

Al Blooshi highlighted that collaborating with real estate developers allows for a comprehensive assessment beyond controlled environments, facilitating identification of future uses while ensuring safety and environmental compatibility.

Sameh Muhtadi, CEO of RAK Properties, noted that the initiative provides an opportunity to observe and evaluate the latest autonomous transport technologies within Mina's expanding urban landscape. He explained that the Mina masterplan is designed to accommodate residents and visitors with an emphasis on integrating new technologies to enhance mobility convenience and accessibility.

Muhtadi stated, "Working together with our close partners at RAKTA for the Autonomous Vehicle Sandbox initiative is a unique opportunity to observe, monitor, and stress-test the very latest transport solutions as they are deployed across Mina's expanding urban environment." He also pointed out the importance of adopting advanced technologies to support daily life by improving transportation services.

This project is part of Ras Al Khaimah's broader strategy to investigate advanced transport technologies and assess how autonomous mobility can be incorporated into future urban developments.
