UAE Authorities Advise Parents to Verify Discounts and Online Sellers for School Supplies
Dubai Consumer Protection urges parents to confirm discounts, check online retailers, and involve children in budgeting for school supplies.
As the new school year approaches, parents in the UAE are being advised to confirm the authenticity of back-to-school discounts, verify the credentials of online sellers, and engage their children in budgeting for school supplies.
Ahmed Ahli, Acting Director of Consumer Protection at the Dubai Consumer Protection and Fair Trade Establishment, stated on Dubai radio's direct line programme that the department has intensified its inspection campaigns at retail outlets ahead of the seasonal shopping period. He noted an increase in the number of stores participating in the campaign, offering a broader selection of school-related products such as bags, clothing, paper, and stationery.
Ahli emphasized that all discounts must be regulated by the department and supported by official permits. Retailers are required to clearly display the price of each product before and after the discount, along with the percentage of the reduction. This transparency is especially important for promotions advertising discounts between 25% and 75%, enabling consumers to verify if the offer represents a genuine saving.
With the growing use of e-commerce for school shopping, Ahli advised consumers to verify the credibility, registration, and licensing of online retailers before making purchases. He cautioned against being the first to transact with unfamiliar companies or websites and recommended researching sellers thoroughly prior to sharing payment information or placing orders.
Consumers are also encouraged to carefully review product descriptions, particularly for items like school bags where size and dimensions impact suitability for children. Checking exchange and return policies in advance, including any additional delivery fees, is also advised.
Ahli highlighted the importance of fostering consumer awareness among children from an early age. The department is expanding awareness campaigns targeting students from primary school through university levels. He suggested that parents involve their children in preparing a list of necessary school supplies and, as children mature, provide them with a budget to compare products and make purchasing decisions.
“For example, one child may prefer to spend more on a durable school bag and save on other items, while another may place greater importance on a lunch bag or pencil case,” Ahli explained. He added that parents should encourage children to evaluate products based on quality, price, and practical features rather than choosing items solely for their color or appearance.
For consumer complaints, shoppers can first visit Consumer Happiness Centres located at about 150 participating retail outlets.
