UAE First Globally to Approve Oral Treatment for Non-Segmental Vitiligo
The UAE has authorized RINVOQ, an oral medication, for treating non-segmental vitiligo in patients aged 12 and older.
The United Arab Emirates has become the first country worldwide to approve an oral medication for the treatment of non-segmental vitiligo. The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) authorized the use of RINVOQ (upadacitinib) for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and above whose condition requires systemic therapy.
Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by the loss of pigment in certain areas, resulting in white patches. This occurs due to the destruction of melanocytes, the cells responsible for melanin production. Although the precise cause remains unclear, an autoimmune response is believed to be a primary factor. The condition is not contagious.
The approval of RINVOQ marks a significant advancement by introducing an oral systemic treatment option for eligible patients with non-segmental vitiligo. The medication is taken once daily and is now available in the UAE for patients meeting the specified medical criteria.
Non-segmental vitiligo can affect various parts of the body and is often more visible in individuals with darker skin tones. Since not all white skin patches indicate vitiligo, professional medical evaluation is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment selection. Existing treatment methods include topical medications, phototherapy, and laser therapies, depending on the type and severity of the condition.
The EDE highlighted that this approval reflects the UAE's advanced regulatory system and its commitment to aligning with global scientific progress, enhancing the pharmaceutical sector, and expediting patient access to innovative therapies.
